TOTM: Energize – Meta Rules

May is a busy month in the online Dice Masters world.  We’ve just had the Corona Consolation OBW Tournament, the regular CR Gameroom monthly one-shot will take place at the end of the month, and the hopefully soon to be announced “other OBW” from the Federation of Elite Dice Masters Players.  We are tossing our TOTM to the pool for those looking for yet another online Dice Masters outlet.

For those that are unfamiliar with the TOTM, here is what you need to know:

  • You will be given specific parameters for a Team Build for the given month.
  • A “fun play night” will be set when people will be welcome to gather and play their Teams themselves for the competition.

This competition will be open worldwide, and anyone is welcome to  join.  The submission deadline for this month will be 11:00 PM Mountain Time on May 22, 2020.  Submissions should be filled out on the TOTM Team Submission Form, or directly through the Discord Server.  This is not a hard deadline, but the more notice I have, the better I can get things set up.

Here is the challenge for May 2020:

We are returning to a previously used Format from the TOTM archives, however in true TOTM form we need to mix it up a bit.  Let me present to you…

What is this?

We ran the Energize Format last year, and you can check out the original version here.  This will work in a similar form, but instead of selecting your Teams with the dice rolls, you will be selecting the Meta Rules for the game you are playing.  That’s right, we are combining the classic Energize with the Chaos Format.  Full props to Nick for helping come up with this idea… and thanks to those who filled out our survey a little while back to determine what rules we would offer up for you.

The rules…

This will be restricted to a Modern build.  The only bans that are in place will be:

  • Becky Lynch: Straight Fire (banned from all DM-North Events)
  • Becky Lynch: Maiden Ireland (banned from all DM-North Events)
  • The God Catcher: Famous Walking Statue (banned from all DM-North Events)
  • Jerry Lawler, Ringside Announcer – Basic Action Card
  • Black Widow – Agent

Proxy dice and cards are allowed under the following conditions:

  • Action dice proxies must match the energy and burst faces exactly.
  • Character dice proxies must have the same symbols, stats, and energy type as the original die.  For example, AVX Black Widow could be used in place of AI Black Widow as they are identical dice.
  • Cards can be freely proxied, as long as it is clear to your Opponent what you are using.

How it works…

There are 4 basic Meta Rules that will be in effect for each game.  They will be different for everyone based on what you and your opponent roll.  At the beginning of each game, you and your Opponent will each roll a Sidekick die.  The meta rules that will be in effect will be based on your dice rolls.  Below are the four basic rules that could be in effect for each game:

**  This ability cannot be copied/gained by another character.  There will be no Hope shenanigans with this one.  ** But what happens if you roll a Question Mark or a Sidekick?  Exactly like the original Energize Format, when you roll a Question Mark, you may choose which one of the rules you would like to have in effect for this game.  If you roll a Sidekick, your Opponent will select one of the rules to use for you.  You cannot have two of the same rules in effect in the same game.

So, what if you roll two of the same basic energy at the start of the game?  In this case, the first rule that will be in effect will be whatever basic energy type that was rolled.  The second rule will activate an immediate clock on your match.  This will be the second rule:

You will do this process for each game you play for this event.  You may not end up playing the same combination more than once all night.

The plan is to play your Team on Saturday, May 23, 2020, starting around 7:00 PM Mountain Time.  We will be starting off the night on our very own Twitch Channel.  Join the chat and we will set up pairings there.  You can find the link to the Twitch Stream here.  Ideally, it would be nice to get 3-4 Rounds of Play in… but we will see what happens.

Matches will be 35 minutes long to avoid slogs.  If the game is tied when time is called, the game will go to 3 turns with the active player being Turn Andy (or Turn Zero if you want).  The player with the most life at the end of Turns will be the winner.

Looking forward to seeing you there.  Thanks for reading and feel free to reach out to us with any questions.

Best of luck!

– Dice Masters North
