Rotation 2022 Speculation

If you have been following the latest news in the world of Dice Masters, you will have heard that Wizkids has officially announced that there will be an actual face to face World’s and US National Dice Masters Tournaments. The details are a little sparse at this time, but we know it will be in Memphis and it will be held from September 15 to 18. That is not the purpose of this article.

If you caught the recent podcast episodes of A Double Double ‘n Dice and The Ministry of Dice, you will have heard that there will be a product rotation in 2022 that will effect Memphis. If you are not really familiar with what Rotation is, it is a way to filter out older sets of cards from competitive play in order to keep the meta “fresh”. It also limits the amount of sets you need to go looking for in order to participate in “Modern”.

The last rotation in Dice Masters happened in 2020, where the Modern sets were set at any of the Campaign Boxes or newer sets. A little pandemic interlude resulted in not much happening in 2021. However, that has all changed leading into the return to live competitive play.

Currently, we have approximately 1000+ cards in Modern that come from sets as old as 2018. What stays? What goes? Take a look at what we think are the likely contenders for the chopping block in 2022.

Before we start, let’s take Avengers: Infinity Gauntlet, The Dark Phoenix Saga, and Superman: Kryptonite Crisis off of the block. These are the newest sets and there is zero chance of any of these sets from being removed from Modern. We are also going to assume that anything released in 2020 (Trouble in Waterdeep and the associated Team Packs) is safe from being chopped.

Avengers: Infinity & Team Packs

ReleaseD 2018

Why Will It Go?

This is currently the oldest set in Modern. If a Rotation is on the horizon, there is no reason to expect this one not to go.

Why Will It Stay?

Losing tools like Under Surveillance, Kree Captain, Supreme Intelligence, and Black Widow will hurt some Team Builds. Although some of these abilities have alternative available in newer sets, it is possible Wizkids will want to leave the tool box open for another year.

Final Verdict?

This is as close to a sure bet as you can get. Avengers: Infinity will be gone.

Warhammer 40K & Team Packs

ReleaseD 2018

Why Will It Go?

First, this set was released in the same year as Avengers: Infinity. Second, we know something changed in the working relationship between the two companies as we never saw the release of the second Warhammer Dice Masters Campaign Box. We suspect Wizkids cannot get this IP out of Modern fast enough.

Why Will It Stay?

With the working relationship between Wizkids and Games Workshop being uncertain, there is zero chance this one stays.

Final Verdict?

If you want an easy bet, this one is guaranteed to be cut. RIP Orks.

Harley Quinn Team Pack

ReleaseD 2018

Why Will It Go?

Like the previous sets, this one is on the older side. We suspect age is going to have a huge factor in the Rotation decision, so it is likely that Harley and Friends are on the chopping block.

Why Will It Stay?

This is a longshot, but the current DC card pool in Modern is much smaller than what Marvel has available. It is possible that the scales could be balanced to give a little more love to the distinguished competition.

Final Verdict?

While it is likely this one is gone, we are selfishly going to call this one 80% likely. Losing Poison Ivy in the beatdown meta would be a huge loss… and Thrown Brick is just so much fun.

Justice Campaign Box & Team Packs

ReleaseD 2019

Why Will It Go?

Age may not be on the side of Justice in this fight. These sets are definitely old enough (from a release date perspective) to consider removing them from Modern.

Why Will It Stay?

Until Superman: Kryptonite Crisis is actually released, this is the only DC set in Modern. There is little chance of Wizkids leaving half of the comic book universe standing on the outside looking in. Also, a meta without Static Field would allow things to get a little “stompy”. On top of everything else, there is some built-in synergy between Kryptonite Crisis and this set. It would be a shame for Justice to leave Modern before we can fully explore this.

Final Verdict?

Justice is staying. The blade would have to cut REALLY deep for this to be removed. It would be shocking NOT to have at least two active DC sets in Modern.

X-Men Forever Campaign Box & Team Packs

ReleaseD 2019

Why Will It Go?

This would be a controversial one to cut for sure. Hope Summers is proving to be a powerhouse with The Dark Phoenix Saga. Perhaps it falls to the age factor as well? That would be the only strike against these sets. The #banhope crowd would be happy to see her off into the sunset.

Why Will It Stay?

Two words: Hope Summers. The X-men tool box is ridiculously good right now and this set really helps it work. Not to mention the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants Affiliation that gained a boost from The Dark Phoenix Saga. There is just too much good here to lose.

Final Verdict?

We are subscribing to the “trimming” of Modern vs swinging at it with a broad sword. Like Justice, we would be surprised to see this one go.

Organized Play Kits

ReleaseD 2019

Why Will It Go?

We feel the Sword of Damocles will fall somewhere in the middle with these Organized Play Kits. If the cuts are made around certain Campaign Boxes, then it makes sense for the OP Kits released around that time are cut as well.

Why Will It Stay?

As above, we don’t believe ALL of the Organized Play cards from 2019 will be sliced. There are definitely some that would fall into the “newer” releases, which should allow them to stay.

Final Verdict?

Super Spies and Stark Industries are likely casualties of the Modern cut here. We would expect to see City Slingers and Marvel Now Heroes to remain behind. Good-bye Agent… Hello Straight Shooter.

WWE Campaign Box & Team Packs

ReleaseD 2020

Why Will It Go?

It appears that Wizkids is getting out of the wrastlin’ business based on Heroclix, and the fact that WWE Dice Masters is no longer on the solicits. Maybe sticking to the capes is where it is at for this game?

Why Will It Stay?

In the grand scheme of things, this is still a “recent” set, as it was released in 2020. We think that if we are going based on chronological order, the spandex crowd will stay.

Final Verdict?

Even though we would love to see Becky be escorted out of Dice Masters, our bet is that the wrestlers will stay until the next rotation.

Final Thoughts…

There is literally no inside knowledge here, all of our thoughts are based purely on speculation… but they make sense to keep a somewhat healthy meta.

What do you think? Do you think Wizkids is going to bring out the big knives to set up Dice Masters 2.0? Does the current version of Modern just need a little trim off the top? Where would you make the cuts if you were in Wizkids position and why? Let us know in the comments below, or on our Socials (@dmNorthTV), or join the conversation on our Discord.

  1. I think you’re spot on for the most part, although I think they’ll probably do away with all the pre-Slingers play at home kit promos, as they would all have dice from rotated out sets at that point, plus the major ones all have reprinted globals/abilities in UC Mystique and Static Field. I’ve done a quick spreadsheet with the numbers of cards in rotation at each point of set release and rotation if you’re interested I’ll pop it over to you

  2. What about a cut of single cards like when they removed yuanti? Other than that it seems logic to mee the sets you reference in the article.

    1. I wonder if they would consider something like that? I suspect Wizkids will go with the easy solution of chopping entire sets though.

  3. I think we’ll see it cut at Avengers Infinity Gauntlet. The old stuff will be stripped away and we’ll live in a modern, draft-only world. New player friendly.

    1. Extremely surprised by the cut. It is definitely new player friendly though. It feels like Dice Masters 2.0 for sure.
