Here, you will find our short and sweet review on the board game we have played from each of the players.  We stream the gameplay on the dmNorthTV Twitch channel every Saturday.  Come hangout and say “Hi” if you get a chance.

Saturday, we played through Marvel Champions: The Card Game.  Dive into the Marvel Universe with Marvel Champions a cooperative Living Card Game for 1-4 players by Fantasy Flight Games.

Final Thoughts About . . . Marvel Champions

Here, we will give you some basic thoughts about the game we played.  This is by no means meant to be an in-depth review of the game, as there are already lots of those out there.  This is just a “what did we think of it and would it be a good board game night game” type thing.  If you want to see something more in-depth, please let us know in the comments below.

I decided to try my hand at one of the newer characters with Rocket Raccoon.  I wanted to try a different play style and really see how it paired with Groot.  While I never really felt like Groot and Rocket were necessary for each other, there were still some cool interactions.  Do you need to play them together?  Not at all.  They would work fine on almost any mix of characters.  Nile I have talked about the game before, my rating for this one is going to go towards the character I played tonight:  Rocket Raccoon.

The play style of Rocket was much different than Spidey, in that you had to focus more on the gadgets and weapons that Rocket had access to.  It definitely felt thematic for the space trash panda.  The Goblin was definitely a tough opponent for the heroes, but we finally managed to put one in the win column.

This is turning into a game I quite enjoy, but I will admit 4 players does make it a longer session.  Thankfully the group I have been playing with makes it fun, so I don’t really mind the length.  It probably also suffers some from the online play.  I suspect in person games would go a little faster.  The more that I play this game, the more I like it.  Rocket is a solid addition to the Marvel Champions roster.

This time around, I got to play as the villain. I was really excited to play as Green Goblin as he would be throwing minions at the heroes and while they are distracted, completing his scheming plans. Plus he has some cool gadgets like the glider and pumpkin bomb. I was ready to see the heroes fail…*evil laugh*. We made quite a few errors (e.g adding scheme) in the game but not major to change the outcome. I kept forgetting to deal damage based on the minion abilities when defeated and counting the icons on the cards plus the actual villain number when doing the villain activation. Would definitely try out Green Goblin again as there is another scenario and three other modular set you can add from the pack.

Since I was playing Marvel Champions for the second time, I was still extremely excited to play. With the usual band of players to play with and still trying to run quicksilver. Last time quicksilver was shut down by klaw and I was hoping to make him shine. Seeing your combos go off and being thwarted by the luck of the draw is what makes this game even more special to play. Kim was the villain today as green goblin. (Kim can never be refered to as a villain) My review is the same as the last time basically. For a serious board gamer, this game would be an absolute 100% buy it now, but for the casual player I would find the gameplay on the difficult scale to learn. This game was not a hit with my family due to the rules and complicated plays. Previously I gave it a 5 for serious players and 3 for casual players and I will now update my ratings to 3 star across the board. The one thing I gave it a 3 is because that is my tipping point for number of players… The game is just too dang long to play with 4 players… It was 4 hours!!! Seeing captain Marvel was fun. Groot and rocket really have unique abilities and of course it’s fun to see them played but not sure how much replayability it has. I was able to get quicksilver going and it honestly is the most fun character to play. I hit for 16 damage for 2 turns in a row but he also took 3.5 hours to set up to do those turns. I still wish that they spin this off and had DC version down the road.

This marvel champions game was a great experience. I enjoyed watching rocket and groot get played. I love what rocket does to draw cards, and drawing cards is my favorite thing to do in most games. I got to play captain marvel, who is a solid character. I played here with the leadership deck which is fine. I would really like to see her with one of the other styles of deck, maybe the aggression deck. Thank you to the other players, because other players make the game a ton better, and these people that I have gotten to play with are awesome.

Marvel Champions updated review. As a semi-seasoned veteran of the game now I can actually say I am still enjoying it as if it were fresh out of the box. It is helpful that they continue to add new villains and characters every month with their LCG system. You still have the option to go all in or pick up expansions or characters you would prefer. Is it it exhausting to play a 3 hour plus game with 4 players? It can be, however as you play with more seasoned players you can easily be more comfortable with 4 players. The fact remains that the sweet spot is still 3 players. What adds even more replay value to me is being able to construct my own deck as I see fit to maximize what I want that character to be able to do. Are they going to be a heavy hitter or will they end up protecting others by managing the scheme or damage that friendly characters take. You are forced to This is definitely a game that I would enjoy playing solo as well (managing 2 hands). Having said all that with a nearly 4 hour game with 4 players it gets 4.5 meeples again because winning is fun and that victory was earned.
