dmNorthTV and Guests play board games!! Saturday nights, we get together with friends and try and play a stream friendly board game. It is usually a fun get together with great people. A time to enjoy to social aspect of gaming that we are lacking right now.
Here, you will find our short and sweet review on the board game we have played from each of the players. We stream the gameplay on the dmNorthTV Twitch channel every Saturday. Come hangout and say “Hi” if you get a chance.
Saturday, we played through Horrified. Horrified is a Universal Monsters themed board game for 1-5 players by Ravensburger. We need to work as a team to bring down the terrifying Monsters before it’s to late.
Boardgamegeek describes Horrified as:
Horrified includes high-quality sculpted miniatures (Frankenstein, The Bride of Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, Dracula, The Mummy, The Invisible Man, Creature from the Black Lagoon). Its innovative, easy-to-learn, cooperative gameplay has players working together against the monsters with varying levels of difficulty. Just as each monster is unique, they require different strategies and tactics to be defeated.
Monsters: Dracula and Creature from the Black Lagoon
We were joined by comicsmike, Ronathan and JackalopeSpam to see if we can take down the Monsters. You can take a look at our gameplay video on our YouTube channel, or scroll on down to see what we thought of the game.
Final Thoughts About . . . Horrified
Here, we will give you some basic thoughts about the game we played. This is by no means meant to be an in-depth review of the game, as there are already lots of those out there. This is just a “what did we think of it and would it be a good board game night game” type thing. If you want to see something more in-depth, please let us know in the comments below.
- 5 Meeples: Fantastic Game, A must-play game!
- 4 Meeples: Great Game, minor flaws.
- 3 Meeples: Good Game, some weaknesses.
- 2 Meeples: OK Game, needs work.
- 1 Meeple: Awful Game. Do not play this unless you want to punish yourself.
I really enjoyed, Horrified. I believe its my third time playing the game. I love the theme with the Universal Monsters and would definitely play again to try out the other monsters, maybe bump up the difficulty. The monsters we played were the recommended monsters if you haven’t played the game before. It’s really easy to learn, fun and a light co-op game. If you don’t mind the theme, recommend to play for sure. We were comparing this game with pandemic, but I find Horrified a bit more in depth as there are variety with the monsters, changes the gameplay.
Horrified is a fun, immersive co-op game where you are running around a town to find ways to beat several different Universal Movie monsters. I enjoyed the choices in the game. You always feel like you are having an impact on the state of the game moving people around, picking up items, passing items around, and fighting monsters. I’m sure this game will be compared to other co-op games like Pandemic. I think that Horrified is a great beginner co-op game with easy, straight forward decisions and a theme that lots of people would love.
Horrified Review. I really enjoyed the overall theme of this cooperative game where we work to defeat the old-timey Universal Monsters from the 1930’s era films. If you have played Pandemic before the board and use of items (vs city cards in pandemic) to defeat the main objective have a similar feel. The game allows you to earn one time use perks by guiding villagers to safety away from the monsters that are trying to defeat you. We played this on its entry level difficulty and it did not feel like a tough challenge, however I do feel at its highest difficulty it poses a greater challenge than Pandemic’s base set at its highest difficulty. This is a game that is going to get some decent replay value as you take on the different combination of monsters. I feel this game would be even more enjoyable if they added an expansion that not only has more monsters (Jekyll/Hyde, Phantom, Dr Frankenstein etc) and characters but introduces a side board to travel as well as having minions to contend with like Igor, aliens or spiders (from the movies The island Earth or Tarantula) I am looking forward to playing this again with 5 players and ramping up its difficulty to see if we can triumph against the universal Monsters.
Horrified has a lot of similarities to Pandemic, but is very uniquely different. The two are about about the same in complexity and chances are if you like Pandemic you’ll also enjoy Horrified. What makes Horrified stand out is that you can play with different monsters each time giving the game a slightly different feel. Definitely check it out if you enjoy Co-Op games. I’ve played a few times now and it’s been a different challenge each time. Co-Op games are not usually my preference, but I’ll play this one from time to time.
